Rural Law Enforcement Officers Say Heinrich is M.I.A.
Albuquerque, NM – The law enforcement professionals responsible for keeping rural New Mexicans safe are criticizing Senator Martin Heinrich’s flimsy assertions about his work on the New Mexico/Mexico border. Several sheriffs from throughout New Mexico are criticizing Senator Martin Heinrich’s claims that he’s worked to close the border, even calling him hypocritical.
Those sheriffs are backing Nella Domenici and say she’ll bring a tough voice to the U.S Senate: one intent on actually securing our southern border.
“Even as far north as we are here, we feel the impact of our unsecure border,” says Sheriff Denise Vigil from Valencia County. “We’ve seen an influx of illegal immigrants transported to and through Valencia County, and our families have felt the devastating impact of Fentanyl. Martin Heinrich hasn’t done nearly enough to help us address these issues and it’s very disappointing. I’ve been sheriff for six years, and I’ve never seen these problems as bad as they are now. Nella Domenici is tough as nails and wants to address our border and fentanyl issues. I trust Nella Domenici.”
Sheriff Vigil was elected as a Democrat but changed parties in 2020 after feeling abandoned by her former party leaders like Martin Heinrich. “Sen. Heinrich just doesn’t support law enforcement the way I think he should.”
The unsecured border has a widespread impact as far north as the four corners area of the state, like San Juan County.
"Martin Heinrich is being hypocritical. For years and years, he’s absolutely failed to secure our border. And New Mexico feels the impacts of Martin Heinrich’s failures,” says San Juan County Sheriff Shane Ferrari. “For years, politicians like the Senator have said there is NO problem at the border. But now, just before an election, suddenly they think it’s an issue. After years of failure, it’s like chasing a runaway horse. Fentanyl, crime, human trafficking, these are all things we face in every single corner of New Mexico. Nella Domenici is a leader who would work in a bipartisan way to secure our border.”
“Martin Heinrich hasn’t done a single thing to secure our border,” said Otero County’s Sheriff David Black in Otero. “Because of Martin Heinrich’s refusal to do anything, the border has become a tremendous crisis, not only to New Mexico but to the entire county. It’s time we get somebody in the Senate who’s serious about securing our border, and that’s Nella Domenici.”
“All New Mexicans want a secure border and safe streets. Instead, we have neighborhoods controlled by the cartels committing violent crimes daily,” said Nella Domenici. “Martin Heinrich’s policies have created the current situation. His unsecure border has brought the Fentanyl War into our communities and caused more than 500 premature deaths a year to New Mexicans. Too many children are left without a father or mother. Too many parents experience the loss of a child. These tragic deaths haunt the survivors for the rest of their lives. Our sheriffs are the frontline, and should be supported, and respected. This crisis demands Senators who work every day to solve this situation. I will be that kind of Senator.”
