Votes and Quotes: As Heinrich finally visits the border, he can't hide his disastrous record
Albuquerque, NM - When Martin Heinrich finally travels to the border - mere weeks before an election - he is haunted by years of votes and statements opposing border security measures, efforts to stop Chinese-originated fentanyl from entering the United States, and policies that would address the human trafficking crises at our border.
During the Biden-Harris Administration - with Heinrich’s support - more than 10 million illegal immigrants have been encountered at the border, while fentanyl from China into Mexico kills tens of thousands of Americans.
“To change his position on securing our border less than three months before an election is dishonest, insulting to voters, and a reminder why Heinrich is a failed politician who will be fired,” said Nella for Senate campaign manager Noah Jennings. “Heinrich’s attempts to distort the facts and gaslight voters to think he has been anything but the responsible leader of the border crisis is typical of DC politicians. New Mexicans know Heinrich has only worked to allow more drugs, more cartels, and more violence to plague our communities.“
HEINRICH’S DANGEROUS RECORD
OPPOSING BORDER BARRIERS
Heinrich voted against restarting the construction of barriers at the U.S. Southern border and repeatedly voted against funding for barriers.
VOTING AGAINST CRACKING DOWN ON DRUGS
Heinrich voted against funding to crackdown on illegal fentanyl smuggling along the Southern border and voted against efforts to provide $300 million for U.S. Customs and Border Protection narcotic and opioid detection efforts.
In August 2022, Heinrich was the deciding vote to kill an amendment that would provide $500 million to ICE for narcotic and drug detection.
INCENTIVIZING ILLEGAL BORDER CROSSINGS
Heinrich twice voted against implementing the “Remain in Mexico” policy.
Heinrich voted twice against continuing Title 42, the program allowing immigration enforcement agencies to quickly expel illegal immigrants.
Heinrich has voted repeatedly against Kate’s Law, which would set mandatory minimum imprisonment for deported felons who illegally re-enter the United States.
Heinrich opposed the Laken Riley Act, legislation that would prohibit migrants who are “charged with, arrested for or convicted of burglary, theft, or larceny” from receiving “any immigration status of benefit.”
Heinrich has repeatedly voted against blocking funds from dangerous sanctuary cities and even praised sanctuary policies on Twitter.
CONTRAST WITH NELLA DOMENICI’S COMMITMENT TO BORDER SECURITY
Nella Domenici’s first stop of the general election campaign was to the U.S. Southern border to meet with community leaders, law enforcement, business owners, ranchers, and educators facing the crisis firsthand.
BOTTOMLINE
The contrast this election could not be more stark. As Martin Heinrich has weakened border security, Nella Domenici has committed to fighting against the fentanyl pouring into our country from China and the escalating crime; while also making border security and national security a top priority.
