Statement on Martin Heinrich Taking Direction From Donors Regarding Support For Biden

Albuquerque, NM - Nella Domenici released the below statement regarding Martin Heinrich’s latest comments about Joe Biden’s candidacy, which The New York Times’ reported Hollywood mega-donors urged Heinrich to drop his support for Biden or else he threatened “you are not getting a dime from me.” Heinrich dropped his support today.

“Instead of having the courage to do this weeks or months ago, Martin Heinrich put poll numbers, Hollywood donor cash, and his political career ahead of the crises facing New Mexico families,” said Nella Domenici. “It wasn't the unaffordable prices, unsafe streets, and an unsecured border that made Heinrich ditch Biden; it was campaign cash, special interest, and his increasingly narrow re-election prospects.”

Nella continued: “This is why New Mexico desperately needs independent and courageous leadership, not more of the same Biden and Heinrich failure we have experienced the last three years.”

Heinrich’s new comments were made following a meeting with a Hollywood mega-donor who told him, “you are not getting a dime from me” if you don’t call on Joe Biden to withdraw the race. Heinrich did precisely that today. The New York Times reported, “Tom Strickler, a founder of the Hollywood talent agency WME, said he had recently met in Los Angeles with Senator Martin Heinrich, Democrat of New Mexico. “If you don’t publicly call for Biden to step aside,” Mr. Strickler said he told Mr. Heinrich’s team on Thursday morning, “you are not getting a dime from me.”

Last week, Nella Domenici's largest fundraising haul of any U.S. Senate candidate in New Mexico political history far exceeded Martin Heinrich's second quarter fundraising numbers. Plus, Nella’s dominant fundraising quarter comes on the heels of two pre-presidential debate polls showing the New Mexico U.S. Senate race statistically tied or nearly tied. 

Heinrich’s campaign has been in crisis as they have released evolving statements over the course of the last two weeks.
